Progress on my new house and other tidbits

You can see the walls going up fast on the new teacher housing here in Ruby. The materials arrived here on a barge on the 24th of September, and the walls were put up on October 2nd. The houses go up pretty quick. They are actually cookie cutter housing kits. A foreman with the company comes out and directs operations, and they hire local labor. It works out good for everyone involved. Notice the snow on the ground. We got our first snow on September 21st.

Picture taken today. Notice the progress on the house. The arctic entry is completed, along with the felt paper and the roof. It sure is coming along nicely. The projected finish date is Thanksgiving. (I'm not holding my breath though, I was told it was going to done over the summer.) Well, that's the way things work in the bush.
Also note the absence of snow. We had about 4 days of fog last week, which caused the temperature to soar up to around 60. It melted all the snow, along with keeping the planes from landing here in Ruby. We had a nice backlog of mail too. Just ask my mom, she sent me some vitamins using Priority mail, and they took two weeks to get here! And yes Mom, I'm taking them every day, so no need to worry.

Congratulations to the Calumet Copper Kings football team, which clinched a playoff berth after taking L'Anse out to the back forty and handing them a good old fashioned butt kicking, 45-0 on Friday night. Kirby, Blakester and the big boys up front have been dominating people left and right, according to my sources, so keep it up. I've been following them on the Gazette website, along with Pasty.com radio broadcasts. The wonders of technology.
The other week when I was coming back through Fairbanks from Anchorage, I was fortunate enough to get to a high school game in Fairbanks. I got to watch the Barrow Whalers, America's northernmost town (check a map), take on the West Valley Wolfpack, a Fairbanks high school. West Valley pulled out the win with touchdown pass with 13 seconds left. It was an awesome game, and it made me wish I was coaching high school football, preferably the Calumet Copper Kings. Someday it will happen, I'm not too worried.
My Michigan Tech Huskies on the other hand, are having a rough year. Hopefully they can turn it around in the final 4 games of the season. Well, gotta run, its almost bedtime. Have a good week.
